Neversink Mountain Brush Fire

At 1617hrs, Berks County Dispatch sent Co. 70 and Co.1 (Mt. Penn) to assist the Reading Fire Department with a working brush fire on S. 9th Street. Upon the response of Brush 70 and Brush 70-1, a large header was noted from the station and an additional from Berks Radio of Reading Fire Car 4 requesting assistance with a working brush fire heading towards S. 9th Street. Both Brush units arrived on location and were met by Reading Fire Car 4 (G. Kellenberger). He requested both units assist with stopping the progress of the fire. As Deputy 70 (L. Hoffert) was meeting with Car 4, the fire jumpped S. 9th street and continued to burn up the hill on the opposite side. Deputy 70 requested additional brush peices and well as tankers due to the poor hydrants on the side of the mountain. After approx. 4 hours the bulk of the working fire was contained and DCNR Forestry Crews arrived and began overhaul and establishing secondary fire lines. All Co.70 units were available at 2130hrs. A special thanks goes out to E-56 (Gouglersville Fire Co.) and Co. 57(Mohnton Fire Co.) for standing by as well as Co 67 (Shillington Fir e Co.) for covering our standby at The Greater Governor Mifflin Community Days.
