Another Day, Another Working Chimney Fire
Thu. Feb 25th 2010

At 1621hrs, Co. 70, E69-1 (Kenhorst) and R/E36 (Shillington) were dispatched to 602 Summit Ave for a reported chimney fire.  Chief 70 (L. Hoffert) went en route and Berks Radio advised the homeowner reporting flames from his chimney.  Chief 70 arrived on location and established Summit Ave. command and moved operations to Zone 4 F-2.  Command also notified all responding apparatus to stage on Summit Ave. due to the tight driveway.  E69-1 arrived on location first with 4 volunteers and as per command, established interior command and began to empty the fire box. When T/L 70 arrived on location with 6 volunteers, they were instructed to take ground ladders and the chimney kit to the roof.  R/E36 arrived and as per command went into service checking for extension in the attic. Crews dropped multiple "chimney bombs" and used Chimflex flares to extinguish the fire.  Once the insert was removed from the hearth, chains were dropped down the flu to remove the remaining creosote that was still burning. Co. 36 crews checked with thermal imaging cameras to find negative extension in the residence. Command placed the fire under control within 45 minutes. All 70 units cleared the scene by 1730hrs.

Units on Scene:

C-70, T/L70, E/T70, U70, E69-1, U69, Car 69, R/E36, R36 and U36
