Working Chimney Fire on Ridgeway Rd.
Wed. Feb 17th 2010

At  1746hrs Co. 70, Engine 42 (Cedar Top) and Engine 69-1 (Kenhorst) were dispatched to the area of I176 and Philadelphia Ave. for a possible chimney fire. Chief 70 (L. Hoffert) went en route and was advised by Berks Radio that a passerby reports flames from a chimney in that area.  While the Chief was en route, Berks Radio advised a second call reports the fire to be at 168 Ridgeway Rd.  Chief 70 arrived on location and reported heavy fire from the chimney and established Ridgeway Road command.  The declaration of the working fire added Co. 36 (Shillington) for RIT and Southern Berks EMS. With the proper address now found, Berks Radio also added Engine 25 (Exeter Twp.) and Engine 23 (Gibraltar) to the assignment which were the proper units due to that address.  Tower/Ladder 70 arrived on location and as per command, the Tower was to go into service with the bucket to the roof with the Chimney Kit.  E-42, E69-1and E-25 crews entered the residence and began to empty the fire box.  Crew dropped multiple "Dy Chemical Bombs" down the chimney to extinguish the bulk of the fire.  Interior crews began to remove the fire box and check for extension.  Interior crews checked and found no signs of extension with the thermal imaging camera.  The roof crew found no visible fire with the removal of the fire box.  The Tower crew dropped a chain down the chimney to open the chimney due to the amount of creosote in the flu.  The fire was placed under control in less then 1 hour.  Last units cleared the scene at 1955hrs.

Units on Scene:

C70, T/L70, E/T70, E42, E69-1, E25, E23, R23, U36 and Southern Berks EMS.
