On April 19, 1916 the Volunteer Fire Company Number 1 of Grill, PA was organized and was incorporated on January 2, 1917. Shortly there after on March 2, 1917 the fire company purchased its first piece of apparatus, a horse drawn chemical unit from the Oakbrook Fire Company.

In 1930 the fire company purchased a Chevrolet chemical apparatus equipped with four 35 gallon chemical tanks and 400 feet of three-quarter inch hose. In 1936 this apparatus was converted to hold booster hose.

On Sunday November 26, 1950 services were held for the laying of the corner stone of the present fire company which not only houses the fire apparatus but also contains the fire company social quarters and ballroom. In 1986 an addition was built to better accommodate the fire company's apparatus.

In 1994 the fire company purchase a 1500 gallon per minute pumper tanker with a 3000 gallon water tank from Pierce Fire Equipment. This pumper tanker is still currently in service today. The pumper tanker, now presently known as Engine 70, has 1500 feet of 5 inch supply hose, a 50 gallon foam cell and seating for six firefighters.

A 1974 Jeep CJ-5 was placed into service in 1981 replacing a 1946 Williys. The CJ-5 Jeep was converted into a brush truck by the fire company's volunteers. The CJ-5 Jeep holds 90 gallons of water and has a PTO driven pump. This unit continues to be in service today as Brush 70-1.

In 1998 the fire company purchased a 1998 Chevrolet pick-up truck to use a squad. The squad is currently equipped with light rescue equipment, a medical bag, oxygen and an automatic external defibrillator.

In 2000 the fire company converted a 1975 CJ-5 Jeep into a 1983 CJ-7 Jeep that holds 95 gallons of water and has a gas powered pump that supplies two (2) 300 foot hose reels with water. This unit is currently in service as Brush 70.

In 2003 the Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 of Grill joined forces with the Township of Cumru and the two other fire company's serving its residence (Cedar Top and Gouglersville Fire Companies) to organize the Township of Cumru Fire Department and begin a cooperative effort between all companies.

In 2004 the fire company received a 1971 Mack Baker 75 foot Aerialscope from the Township of Cumru. It was decided that the Grill Fire Company would serve as the Township's aerial company by the Board of Directors of the Township of Cumru Fire Department in 2003. This apparatus was purchased by the Township from the Cheltenham Fire Department near Philadelphia, PA. This apparatus is currently in service and slated for replacement in the near future.

While many things have changed in the dedication of the fire company's volunteers towards serving the community has remained unchanged. The fire company today continues to serve its community with highly trained, 100% volunteers.
